Distances for a Scaled Solar System

Scaled solar systems, such as the Planet Walk near Baltimore, are visual ways to show the distances within the solar system. A Planet Walk in Anchorage is scaled so that it takes 8 minutes to walk from the Sun to the Earth, the same time a photon takes to travel from the Sun to the Earth in space. This requires a 9 mile size for the planet walk. Another is the Sagan Planet Walk in Ithaca. The Planet Walk at the University of Delaware is scaled to put the inner solar system within a small part of the campus.

Pick the feature you want to emphasize and build your own Planet Walk!

Below is a form to enter a size and have a listing of the distance from the Sun point to each planet along with the scaled diameter of each object. The units are listed as feet and inches, but you can use any you want. To make the length of the walk and diameter of the Sun consistent you must set the second column to 0.056/40 times the length of the Walk.
